Purpose-built “vertical” agents

SaaS-esque agents built with specialized UIs, designed for a single industry or workflow. Highly tuned, but often rigid and limited.
Pros:
- Easy to “plug & play”
- Tailored workflow
- Domain-specific support teams
Cons:
- Inflexible workflow
- Data silos & lack of shared context
- Often not truly agentic (e.g. can’t “reason”)
Best for:
- Extremely specialized use cases e.g. Life Sciences research.



Custom “code” agents
e.g. LangChain, CrewAI, Google A2A
Fully custom agents built by in-house dev teams, using orchestration frameworks, python and APIs. Fully customizable, but costly to build/maintain.
Pros:
- Complete flexibility and extensibility
- Fine-grained control over behavior
- Creates IP and core competencies in-house
Cons:
- Requires massive engineering effort
- No built-in UI, monitoring, or ops
- Fragile and hard to maintain over time
Best for:
- Building agents in areas of core competency e.g. in-product features.


Chat-based agents
e.g. Manus (Consumer), Azure Copilot (Enterprise)
Single-turn or short-context LLM wrappers embedded in chat interfaces. Geared toward Q&A or performing one-off tasks.
Pros:
- Familiar UX (chat)
- Low-friction adoption
- Fast execution for simple actions
Cons:
- Massively unreliable for complex tasks
- Can’t be systematized/automated
- Steep prompting learning curve
Best for:
- One-off tasks and personal knowledge work, simple writing & cleanup, light research.




Workflow automation w/ agents
e.g. Zapier, N8N, Gumloop, Lindy.ai
No-code tools that use “string of agents” LLM steps in rule-based automation workflows. Usable by non-devs, but complex to build & maintain.
Pros:
- No-code / low-code accessible
- Robust & simple integration ecosystems
- Typically reliable across complex workflows
Cons:
- Very granular rule logic is complex to build
- No reasoning to adapt to novel scenarios
- No memory or shared context across workflow
Best for:
- Basic form-filling, data syncing, and repetitive linear tasks with consistent process.


Browser agents

Agents that act in the browser, simulating human-like navigation to complete tasks across web apps. Still highly unreliable with current technology.

- Slow and costly execution
- Poor security controls
Best for:
- Simple, repetitive browser tasks with low precision requirements and low-stakes.

Agentic process automation
